WS-20: Workshop on Optical Wireless Communications: Energy Efficiency, Resilience, and Pervasive Coverage

WS-20: Workshop on Optical Wireless Communications: Energy Efficiency, Resilience, and Pervasive Coverage

Future 6G wireless networks, surpassing the capabilities of 5G, are being shaped around critical Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) such as ubiquitous connectivity, ultra-low latency, and terabit data rates. Moreover, the role of future networks extends beyond digital communication to encompass global growth, sustainability, security, access equality, contribution to net-zero, and equity. To achieve these goals, academia and industry must integrate innovative and disruptive technologies, including Optical Wireless Communications (OWC), into the architecture of future networks. OWC enables the extension of network reach beyond terrestrial systems to include aerial and satellite networks. Offering secure and high data rate communication links, OWC can be applied in diverse scenarios, from indoor access networks to free space backhaul links. Consequently, research endeavors are increasingly focused on device development and signal processing techniques in the field of OWC. Despite several advancements, several challenges remain, requiring attention to fully deploy OWC systems within the future network architecture. To further explore the potential of OWC, we invite leaders of the field and researchers around the globe to submit their latest original research papers to this workshop.

Topics of interest in the field of OWC include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • OWC and LiFi modulation, coding, and detection.
  • Integration of OWC in 5G/6G and beyond.
  • Satellite communication including low earth orbit (LEO) and deep space optical communication (DSOC).
  • Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS) for OWC.
  • Physical layer security for OWC.
  • Joint energy harvesting and communication.
  • Digital twin-enabled OWC systems.
  • Advanced materials for OWC applications.
  • Optics design (lenses, concentrators, diusers, etc.).
  • Multiple access techniques for OWC including NOMA, RSMA, etc.
  • Artificial intelligence and machine learning for intelligent and adaptive OWC networks.
  • Integrated light-based communication and sensing.
  • Free space backhaul design.
  • OWC for vehicular applications.
  • Hybrid RF/THz/OWC links.
